The deal

Both the Player and the Banker are dealt two cards. If either hand totals 8 or 9 on those first two cards, that’s called a natural, and the round ends immediately with no further cards drawn. If neither hand has a natural, the third-card rules come into play.

The third-card rule

This is the part that confuses newcomers, but here’s the good news: you never have to memorise it. The software applies it automatically. Still, it helps to understand the logic.

The Player hand acts first. If the Player’s first two cards total 0–5, the Player draws a third card. If the total is 6 or 7, the Player stands.

The Banker’s action is more nuanced and depends both on the Banker’s own total and on the value of the Player’s third card. As a general principle, if the Banker’s first two cards have a low total, the Banker draws; if the total is high (7), the Banker stands. Between those extremes, whether the Banker draws depends on the card the Player just took.

You don’t need to track any of this at the table — but knowing it exists explains why the Banker bet is very slightly stronger, which is why casinos charge a commission on Banker wins.

The Three Bets: Player, Banker and Tie

Every round of baccarat comes down to three core wagers. Understanding their payouts and true odds is the single most useful thing you can learn.

Player bet

A winning Player bet pays 1:1 (even money). It carries a house edge that is very low — one of the best in the casino. It’s the most straightforward wager and a natural starting point for new players.

Banker bet

The Banker bet also pays even money, but a commission (typically 5%) is deducted from winnings. Why?
